Busy week with PowerPlant

The North America Mission Board (NAMB) has a program called Powerplant that connects Student Ministries and Church Plants in hope to plant seeds of church planting in the next generation. This past week Greenville hosted the largest powerplant in the country with over 200 coming to the Upstate to help Church Plants.

The group that helped us was from Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Montergermy, Alabama. They were an amazing blessing to Capstone and Fountain Inn. The students and adults from Ridgecrest did an amazing job helping get some MAJOR work done at the building. They also planned and ran Capstone’s first Summer Kamp at Woodside Park.

I will be posting a highlight video next week. Thank you to Adam and his students for impacting the kingdom of Christ! Great Job.

Capstone turns six months old

Sunday Morning Capstone will be turning 6 months old.  That seems like a lifetime ago, but it also seems like just last week.  I have to remind folks that Capstone is still learning how to crawl.  Myself and many others would love for her to be up running with ministries and life change.  The reality is that in our short six month existence we have seen God move in ways that make our older counter parts jealous!  Has God completed His work this bride – Capstone?  Absolutely not!  I can only imagine what Capstone will be six months from now.  The only thing I do know is that we are enjoying the ride.

Back in Black

After taking a month off from the blog world. I am back ready to blog away. The Tanners are all settled into our new house in Fountain Inn. Capstone’s Buiding is to a place where we aren’t working on it 24-7. And I am trying to get back into a routine with LIFE!
This week I am committing to blogging everyday to get the 3 people who check the blog out caught up with what has been going on in the life of Walter and Capstone.
So this week make sure to stop by to hear stories, see pictures, and maybe even a video update.

Not Giving Up on Blogging

This past month (april) and into May has been the CRAZIEST and BUSIEST month of my life. Something had to give – the blog. Here are some of the things going on this past month:
- FI Community Egg Drop (awesome)
- Renovating New Building for Capstone (can’t believe)
- Easter Service (amazing – 8 salvations)
- Half Marathon (survived)
- Closed on New House (exciting)
- Renovation of new house (draining)
- THIS SATURDAY moving!

Once we are in the new house I hoping to get back into a routine of blogging again. Right now life has been a little chaotic. Apparently people are still checking out the CapstonePastor Blog – now that is CRAZY!

Valentines Day Marriage Retreat

Erwin McManus This weekend the Capstone pastors (me and Chris Barrineau) are taking our wives to the a Marriage Retreat in Ridgecrest, NC.  We will be hanging out with several young church planter couples in South Carolina: Jay Hardwick, Jay Mitchell, Chris Reeder, Will Browning, Todd Magouyrk and Dustin Willis.

There are several things I am looking forward to: spending time with my awesome wife, hanging out with these guys as fellow planters and Betsy getting to spend times with their wives, an illustionist, Shane and Shane leading worship, and one of my heroes – Erwin McManus and his wife sharing about marriage.

This will be the first time we leave Luke for the night.  I will be fine – Betsy on the other is not so quick to dump the kid off at the grandparents.  I am excited to see what God does in this short little getting away for VDay.

Stimulus Bill might limit churches

This is from page 193 of the stimulus bill, that could be voted on by the Senate as early as today.

(3) PROHIBITED USES OF FUNDS.—No funds
awarded under this section may be used for—
(A) the maintenance of systems, equipment, or facilities, including maintenance associated with any permissible uses of funds described in paragraph ;
(B) modernization, renovation, or repair of
stadiums or other facilities primarily used for
athletic contests or exhibitions or other events
for which admission is charged to the general public;
(C) modernization, renovation, or repair of
facilities— (i) used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity; or in which a substantial portion of
the functions of the facilities are subsumed
in a religious mission;
or (D) construction of new facilities.

This is a very general line in the Economic Stimulus bill being debated in the Senate. Some have suggested that it might cause schools to lose government grants or funding if there is a church meeting there. Someone mentioned this to me last week but I didn’t really hear much about it. I asked my lawyer wife. She thinks it is more targeted at “christian schools.”

It falls under (C) which says “modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities”. I interpurt that as saying the money giving to a school can’t be used to make a place better or renovated for a religious group. BUT I am sure the ACLU will use it to say NO CHURCHES in schools.

Something to chew on. Might be a small step in limiting churches in America. You decide.

Double Alley Oop Slam

For real – this is SICK! A double Alley Oop. Watch #1 sitting on the bench he knows that just happened. I think you used to could do that on the old school NBA JAMS – “He’s on Fire!!!” This move will soon be coming to an NBA team near you.

Mr. Mom

dsc_0331This week I have been playing Mr. Mom while Betsy has been at doctor appointments (having outpatient surgery Thursday) and heading into court. The SC Bar requires that lawyers in the state go to several different types of court room cases before they are allowed to practice. So this week Luke has been my number one priority. And let me say it ain’t no easy job.

First off Betsy is the Best Mom Ever! I know I may not be the best judege, but she really does a great job with Luke everyday. So I have a lot to live up to while she is gone. And yes I have messed things up already. I have already gotten in trouble. But hey that is what dads do – especially ones that have NO IDEA what they are doing.

There is one thing I am good at – ironing.  And I just ironed my wife’s shirt so she could go be a lawyer.  Yes, I am man enough to admit.
This week’s posts might be a little thin – but the 10 folks who read it will not miss too much
